During the migration to the new Domain Registration System, the operation of the .hu zone will remain uninterrupted, ensuring that existing websites and email services will be continuously accessible.
The .HU domain registration is being renewed!
On March 20, 2025, the new Domain Registration Policy will come into effect, bringing significant changes to the domain name application processes and domain-related administration. These changes are driven by the implementation of the NIS2 regulation (the EU’s cybersecurity directive) and the introduction of a new version of the Domain Registration System.
The reason for the changes
A new, modern system
The development of the current Domain Registration System began in the early 2000s, and over time, it has become outdated in terms of technology, user-centricity, and sustainability. The introduction of a new system has become necessary.
Standardization
Several processes of the .HU domain have differed from international practices. With the new system, the goal is to align the domain registration process more closely with international standards.
Simplification
There was a demand for a simpler domain registration process for both registrars and end users.
NIS2 compliance
Compliance with the elevated cybersecurity requirements set by NIS2 and EU cybersecurity directives was a key focus during the development process. NIS2 aims to strengthen the security of the cyber domain and information systems.
Between February 17 and March 20, 2025, the domain registration processing time will temporarily change.
How will the temporary changes affect me?
In the case of a new domain registration
For applications submitted after February 17, 2025, it is crucial that they are successfully registered by the transition date. If the Registrar requests additional documentation, it is advisable to provide it as soon as possible to ensure a swift evaluation. If the application does not reach the conditionally registered status, it will need to be resubmitted in the new system, where it must comply with the new Domain Registration Policy requirements, including email and phone number verification.
In the case of a registrar change
Until the migration (March 20, 2025), the process will proceed in the usual manner with the standard documentation procedures. If the change of registrar is not completed by the transition date, it will have to be carried out according to the new Domain Registration Policy, which involves transitioning to multi-factor authentication and requesting a domain security code afterward. This will certainly require at least one authentication procedure, involving communication with the Registry based on the factor data.
Changes to the announced domains
From February 17, 2025, until the completion of the migration, domains that are being parked prior to cancellation or deletion will have their cancellation withdrawal period, as per Domain Registration Policy 6.1.e, and the 30-day grace period in Domain Registration Policy 6.3, extended to 37 days. The modified listing period will revert to the duration defined by the then-current Domain Registration Policy after the transition. Therefore, it is important to monitor the dates of domains that have entered the “parked before deletion” status in the listing to correctly calculate the appropriate deletion time!
Deadlines for supplementing documents and submitting complaints
From the start of the transition, the deadline for the Registry’s decision, as outlined in point 43 of the franchise Terms and Conditions, will be suspended until April 1, 2025. However, the Registry will strive to adhere to the usual 2-day decision period. For domain applications registered in the 30 days prior to the transition, the 30-day deadline for document supplementation and application cancellation, as per Domain Registration Policy 1.2.3.4 and 1.2.3.5, may be extended to 60 days.
How will the migration to the new system affect domains?
No technical modifications will be possible
On March 19, 2025, at 10:00 PM, the Domain Registration System will temporarily be unavailable to Registrars. However, the operation of the .hu zone will not be interrupted by the downtime.
From 10:00 PM on March 19, 2025, until a maximum of 48 hours (10:00 PM on March 21, 2025), it will not be possible to transfer domain ownership or registrars, modify domain data or DNSSEC, change, add, or delete nameservers, register new domains, or renew expired domains.
During the downtime, the domains will continue to function
During the downtime, domains will continue to function, so existing websites and email services will remain accessible. However, new domain registrations, renewals, and data modifications will not be possible during this period.
It’s advisable to make the necessary changes before the downtime to avoid any potential inconvenience.
