The main steps are:
1. Checking the avalability of the name
This can be done here.
2. Choosing a registrar
More than 100 organizations deal with .hu domain registration, these companies are called registrars. You are free to choose from them, the full list can be found here. The registrar is an important player, as he will be the service provider for the domain applicant or registrant. The registrant will have a contract with the registrar, will receive invoices and support from him, and will communicate with the Registry through the registrar. Registrars provide all the necessary services to make the domain work, and maybe more, eg., storage, email etc.
3. Concluding a domain registration and maintenance contract with the registrar of your choice
This can be done on paper or online. Registrants are free to set their service fees and terms and conditions, but these terms and conditions may not conflict with the Domain Registration Policy. Registrars may also offer various other services to their clients (e.g., hosting, email, and other server services).
Please note that only real data can be provided when requesting a domain. It is possible that someone obtains a domain based on false or fictitious information, but this may result in the loss of the domain later.
For the conclusion of the contract, the registrar may request a number of data, but the minimum data required by the Domain Registration Policy is as follows:
- Natural person domain applicant: name, postal address, e-mail address, telephone number and, at the applicant’s choice: either the number of the identity document (identity card, passport, license or residence permit) or the date of birth.
- Legal entity domain applicant: name, postal address, email address, telephone number, tax number, name of legal representative.
- Self-employed domain applicant: name, postal address, email address, telephone number, tax number.
It is also necessary to provide the data of the administrative contact person if it differs from the domain applicant: name, postal address, e-mail address, telephone number, in the case of a sole proprietor, his tax number.
In some cases it may still be necessary to provide:
- Heir of a deceased Registrant as Domain Applicant: name, postal address, e-mail address, telephone number and, as chosen by him or her, the number of the identity document (id card, passport, driving licence or residence permit) or his or her birthdate, as well as: grant of probate, certificate of inheritance or statement of inheritance.
- Person authorising the use of name: name, residential address.
It is a good idea to give yourself as administrative contact person, because the administrative contact has very strong authority over a domain. Detailed information about the administrative contact is provided in Section 12 of the Domain Registration Policy.
4. Payment
Registrants usually ask for payment in advance – especially when registering online – some only after successful registration. In most cases, payment is made by credit card or bank transfer. Most often, the fee also includes two years of domain maintenance. Payment terms and fees may vary significantly by registrar.
5. Acceptance of declarations
As of July 1, 2020, the Domain Registration Policy allows two types of domain applications: document-based domain applications and confirmation procedure-based domain applications. (Currently, not all registrants allow confirmation procedure-based domain registration.) Both application forms can be online and paper-based. The main difference is that in the case of the confirmation procedure-based domaine, the domain applicant can confirm his application or the changes later with his email address and possibly his mobile number. For document-based registered domains documents are often required for major modifications.
If the registrant initiates the registration process online at the registrar, after entering into the contract (and often the payment) a notification is received from the registrar asking them to accept certain statements (in the case of a paper contract, these statements are accepted by the registrant on paper). The following statements must be made in connection with the application, delegation and maintenance of .hu domains:
- Declarations in case of document-based domain application
- I am familiar with, accept and shall comply with the Domain Registration Policy in force at any time;
- I shall accept the decisions of the Registry and the Registrar in issues relating to the application for, delegation and maintenance of the domain;
- I acknowledge that in the case of disputes relating to the conformity of the applications to the Domain Registration Policy, the Registrar and the Registry will submit themselves to the Alternative Dispute Resolution Forum and moreover neither the Registrar nor the Registry are responsible for the implementation of decisions brought during the alternative dispute resolution;
- I guarantee that I have completed this application form with real data. I accept that the delegation of the domain is to be revoked in case the data provided are false or I fail to notify the registrar about changes in data;
- I have read and accept the Privacy Statement and I authorise the handling of my personal data in the register and that this authorisation is legal according to the laws of my country;
- I have read the Application Form in its entirety and approvingly signed, respectively accepted it.
- Declarations in case of confirmation procedure-based domain application
In the case of a confirmation procedure-based application, the applicant will receive an email from the Registry, in which they will click on the link provided to go to a website where they can accept the required statements and confirm their application. The statements:
- “I confirm that I have submitted a domain application with the genuine data as listed above, and
- I acknowledged the risks associated with Confirmation procedure-based domain registration, therefore that whoever has the factors I specified may dispose of the domain without limitation, even without my knowledge. I understood that I have to pay special attention to retaining the disposal of the factor data.
- In case of a one-factor conformation process further text: I understood that I may switch to the two-factor confirmation procedure at any time, which procedure provides greater security.
- I know and accept the Domain Registration Policy and I will observe and comply with the provisions of prevailing effective Domain Registration Policy during the entire domain application and delegation and I consider it binding on myself or the domain applicant I represent.
- In matters related to the application for, the delegation and maintaining of the domain I accept the decision of the Registry and the Registrar. I declare that in case of legal disputes related to the application for and the use of the domain I will submit myself to the Alternative Dispute Resolution Forum procedure.
- I read, understood and accept the contents of the Privacy Policy, and I grant my consent to the processing of my personal data in accordance with it.”
These statements must be accepted on the specified web page in order for the domain application to be confirmed at the Registry. Declarations must be accepted within 14 days, otherwise the application will be canceled by the Registry and the process will need to be restarted.
6. Technical check
Once the declarations have been accepted, the Registry will carry out a technical check.
In general, registrars provide the necessary background services for the technical functionality of the domain, so applicants have nothing to do with it, unless they themselves want the operate the so-called name servers. However, if the domain does not meet the technical requirements, the Registry will notify the registrar. You have 14 days to correct the technical error, after which the request will be canceled.
We have written more about the technical conditions here, the operation of the name severs can be checked here.
7. Checking the fulfillment of other conditions of the Domain Registration Policy
The Registry verifies the accurate and complete provision of data in the application and the fulfilment of the domain application criteria. The Registry is not obliged to check that the chosen name complies with the law and the Domain Registration Policy, the responsibility for the choice and use of the names rests entirely with the applicant and registrant respectively.
8. Granting the right of use conditionally
From the acceptance of the declarations, the right of use of the domain domain is granted conditionally to the applicant typically in one business day (often within a few hours). The applicant will be notified by the registrar.
Conditional granting means that the domain technically is fully operational and usable, but the delegation has not yet taken place legally.
At the same time, the domain is published by the Registry.
9. Delegation, granting the right of use of the domain
If no complaint is received regarding the registration within 8 days of granting the right of use conditionally, the delegation will become final. A delegation does not mean that a domain name registration cannot be complained about later.
The official date of commencement of use of the domain will be the date of the granting the right of use conditionally, and this date will be the anniversary of the registration to be considered at the maintenance renewal.
