Temporarily, between February 17 and March 20, 2025, the domain registration processing time will change

On March 20, 2025, a new .HU Domain Registration Policy will come into effect, and simultaneously, a new Domain Registration System will be launched. This will bring significant changes to the domain name application processes and domain-related administration.

The reason for the changes

A new, modern system

The development of the current Domain Registration System began in the early 2000s, and over time, it has become outdated in terms of technology, user-centricity, and sustainability. The introduction of a new system has become necessary.

Standardization

Several processes of the .HU domain have differed from international practices. With the new system, the goal is to align the domain registration process more closely with international standards.

Simplification

There was a demand for a simpler domain registration process for both registrars and end users.

NIS2 compliance

Compliance with the elevated cybersecurity requirements set by NIS2 and EU cybersecurity directives was a key focus during the development process. NIS2 aims to strengthen the security of the cyber domain and information systems.

The migration to the new system will take place from March 19, 2025, 10:00 PM to March 21, 2025, 10:00 PM.

We plan to launch the new Domain Registration System no later than 48 hours from the start of the downtime March 19, 2025, until March 21, 2025, 10:00 PM.

In order to manage domain names and ensure a secure migration, temporary changes will be made to the processes and certain points of the Domain Registration Policy starting from the 31st day before the migration.

Below, we present the expected changes and their dates:

Submission of new applications

  • For new applications submitted after February 17, 2025, it is important to ensure that the application is successfully registered before the migration day. If the Registrar requests additional documentation, it is recommended to provide it as soon as possible so that the application can be processed positively as quickly as possible. If the application does not reach the conditionally registered status, it will need to be resubmitted in the new system. However, be aware that at this point, the application must meet the requirements specified in the new Domain Registration Policy. Therefore, the Registrar may request confirmation of the applicant’s email address and phone number, or this will be done by the Registry later.
  • Applications that are recorded by 10:00 PM on March 19, 2025, but are not positively processed, will be deleted by the Registry. During the migration, the Registry will re-record these applications under the Registrar’s name in the new system. This date will serve as the official registration date of the application. For these domain applications, the data entry provision outlined in point 42 of the franchise’s Terms and Conditions will be suspended. Certain modification requests recorded by 10:00 PM on March 19, 2025, may be deleted by the Registry, and the Registrar will be notified. These modification requests must be resubmitted by the Registrar after the migration, in compliance with the new Domain Registration Policy.

Cancellation, parking before deletion

From February 17, 2025, until the completion of the migration, for domains that are subject to cancellation or parking before deletion, the withdrawal in accordance with the Domain Registration Policy 6.1.e and the 30-day grace period specified in the Domain Registration Policy 6.3 will be extended to 37 days.

The changed advertising period will return to the duration specified in the then-effective Domain Registration Policy after the migration.

In the announcement list, it is important to pay attention to the dates of the names that have been parked before deletion in order to calculate the correct deletion time!

Assessment deadlines, additional documentation, application cancellation

From the start of the migration, the time limit affecting the Registry’s assessment deadline, as stated in point 43 of the franchise’s Terms and Conditions, will be suspended until April 1, 2025. However, the Registry will strive to adhere to the specified assessment time (2 days).

For domain applications recorded in the 30 days prior to the migration, the 30-day deadline for submitting additional documentation and application cancellation, as specified in points 1.2.3.4 and 1.2.3.5 of the Domain Registration Policy, may be extended up to 60 days.

Domain announcement, conditionally registered domain names, complaint submission

  • Domain names that are conditionally registered and advertised within the 8 days preceding March 20, 2025, as per point 1.2.3.6 of the Domain Registration Policy, will be registered during the migration. However, the option to submit a complaint will still be available within 8 days from the advertisement of these domain names. The process of the Domain Dispute Resolution Procedure and its deadlines in relation to the advertisement of the domain name will remain unchanged.
  • For domain applications recorded in the 14 days prior to the migration, the 14-day period for submitting complaints against rejected domain names, as specified in point 9.4 of the Domain Registration Policy, will be extended to 28 days.

The migration process, details

  • On March 19, 2025, at 10:00 PM, the Domain Registration System will temporarily become unavailable to Registrars. However, the operation of the .HU zone will not be disrupted during the downtime.
  • From 10:00 PM on March 19, 2025, until a maximum of 48 hours (until 10:00 PM on March 21, 2025), the Registry will only be able to make modifications to the .HU zone (nameserver/DNSSEC) in exceptional cases where the normal operation of the zone is at risk.

During the migration period, neither registration nor modification will be possible. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Domain user and registrar change
  • Domain data modification
  • Nameserver modification, addition, deletion
  • DNSSEC modification
  • New domain registration
  • Domain renewal after expiration

The new Domain Registration System is planned to be launched until March 21, 2025, 10:00 PM.
